To the House of Representatives,
We, the undersigned, request that the New Zealand House of Representatives review the current Strategy regarding the management of fisheries and biodiversity in the Ross Sea.
The Ross Sea marine ecosystem is regarded by marine scientists as the last intact open-ocean marine ecosystem on Earth. We believe the continued harvest of Antarctic toothfish compromises the ecological viability and intact qualities of this ecosystem.
We call upon the New Zealand Government to propose, through its delegation to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), that all commercial fishing in the Ross Sea be prohibited, and that the Ross Sea (including the continental shelf and slope) become a Marine Protected Area.
